Description
Montombraro of Zocca, Church of the Blessed Savior
The existence in Montombraro of a parish church dedicated to the Blessed Savior is documented in 1110 while a document dating back to 1291 suggests that the religious building belonged to the parish of Ciano. During the Modern period, the church was in a serious decay as certified in 1565 by cardinal and bishop of Modena Giovanni Morone in the account of his pastoral visit to the town. The prelate commissioned a restoration work. However, the restoration was never launched since the parish had been left without a rector for many years because of bandit incursions in that border area. During a new pastoral visit in 1606, the restoration work of the building was considered unfeasible and the prelate decided to move the church in another location. The new parish church was moved to what now is its current location. It was built on the remains of the old castle’s stable and one of the remaining towers of the castle was adapted to serve as tower-bell. During the 18th century, another restoration work took place. During World War 2, the church underwent some other damages: both its Gothic arc gate and its tower-bell were destroyed. After the Liberation, the tower-bell was rebuilt according to a simpler structure.
