Description

Modena, St. Charles Church

St. Charles Church was built in 1640 as the religious building of the College of Nobles and was originally dedicated to the Blessed Virgin and St. Charles. In 1161, the Congregation of the College decided to enlarge the building and commissioned the project to Bartolomeo Avanzini. Avanzini was inspired by the Roman church of St. Charles of Cattinari. After his death, from1664 the direction of the building work passed to Giovan Pietro Piazza and the church was finally completed in the 18th century. The coverage of the building is made of a high dome realized by Pietro Termanini in 1770, after the first vault collapsed. The interior decoration of the church comprises valuable altars made of multicolor marbles built in the 18th century and partially modified during the 19th century. The valuable Baroque altarpieces decorating them are the work of Francesco Vellani, Olivier Dauphin and Francesco Stringa. At the bottom of the apse, the monumental molding system designed by Cestellino encloses the Triumph of the Faith realized by Marcantonio Franceschini in 1701. On the left part of the building, the choir loft hosts a majestic organ pipe realized by Antonio Traeri in 1714 while the first altar is adorned by the valuable Santa Caterina altarpiece which was painted by Adeodato Malatesta. In the 19th century, it replaced the original altarpiece of the 17th century.
