Description
Modena, St. Bartolomeo Church
The construction of St. Bartolomeo Church began in 1607. The church was entitled to host the Jesuit order. Inside, the church counts a lot of frescoes, moldings and paintings. The original project foresaw the creation of a privileged observation point inside the church. This “perspective point” is still indicated on the floor by a big black disk from which the observer may experience the space illusion effect caused by the paintings covering the roof and by the false dome. The roof above the nave is decorated with Eterno in trono circondato da Santi while the presbytery is adorned with St. Bartolomeo Apotheosis. The whole interior decoration is the work of Friar Giuseppe Barbieri who also realized the false dome which recalls the one designed by Andrea Pozzo in the Roman church of St. Ignazio, mother church of the Jesuit order. All other paintings can be attributed to some important artists who worked from the 17th to the 19th century like Giuseppe Maria Crespi, Ludovico Lana, Giovanni Romani and Adeodato Malatesta. Moreover, the interior decoration counts some moldings made by Antonio Traeri, also known as Cestellino, and some valuable wooden furnishings.
