Description
Castelfranco, Villa Sorra
The construction of the villa probably started in 1698, when Antonio Sorra was appointed count by Duke of Modena Rinaldo I of Este. However, the completion of the wide garden and interior decoration of the villa was supervised by his son Francesco Maria who was the owner of the big farm of Gaggio since 1738. Inside the villa, the official and habitable spaces are arranged around a wide oval room decorated with some perspective views. The surrounding environment is composed of two small rooms decorated with a series of twelve views representing the garden, the villa and landscapes of fantasy in line with the Bolognese decorative taste of that time. Outside the villa, there is the big formal garden that the Sorra family wanted as a distinctive sign of their new social status. During the 19th century, the garden was modified according to the Romantic garden fashion. In particular, the apparently wild vegetation hides some amusement sites like the old medieval ruins and the cave -accessible thanks to a secret passage in the flank of a small artificial hill- overlooking the small lake.
