Description
Modena, Academy of Sciences, Letters and Arts
The Academy was born in 1683 under the name of Academy of “Dissonanti” on the initiative of Dario Sangiovanni, representative of the Congregation of Saint Charles and the Blessed Virgin, of Marquis Bonifazio Rangoni, of Count Pirro Graziani and of friar Michelangiolo Fardella. The need of an academy in the capital of the Este State was longtime felt. From the beginning of the 17th century, a short time after Modena became capital of the State and seat of the Este court, the community insistently requested the conservatories to reopen the ancient university site. Thanks to the aid of the municipality of Modena, the creation of the Academy run parallel to the University conversion from the Congregation of Saint Charles and the Blessed Virgin to the Public Study. In 1752, Duke Francis III conferred the Academy the duchy title in order to underline the benevolence of the Este family towards such institution. The academic activities had longtime covered only the field of Letters. In 1791, when the new Constitutions were issued, Sciences started to be taught again within the Academy. Applied arts started to be taught only during the following Napoleonic period. Under Francis IV, the Academy was given a royal title. However, the state character of the institution was confirmed by the unified government, which issued a new Statute in 1860. Today the Academy comprises a big library containing 130,000 publications among which there are 35 incunambula and a great number of ancient books. It also collects some important archive funds (Este Gridario, Ruffini Fund and Soli Fund), a rich list of triumphs donated by Marquis Luigi Rangoni as well as the Tardelli Music Fund which is composed of books dealing with opera and operetta, dances, actions and holy speakers.
