Description
Modena, St. Augustine Former Hospital
The complex of buildings today known as St. Augustine former hospital started to be built since 1753 on the initiative of Duke Francis III. The estate would have provided the new city hospital. The sovereign himself laid down its foundation stone. The decision to join together all the structures providing assistance to homeless and ill people led to an enlargement of the construction, which in fact was extended compared with the original project. In 1773, the ergonomic theatre was erected. In the same year, St. Nicholas chapel was built in order to provide the funeral services. The block underwent a lot of additions and modifications but in 2005 it was abandoned and the hospital was transferred elsewhere. Today there are some ongoing restoration and transformation projects which would enable the complex to host local culture institutions. The window grating, the hall railing and the façade over-doors are the work of blacksmith of Modena Giovanni Battista Malagoli. The quarters of the clock which was once placed in the hall, are some of the few traces of the typical 18th century decoration. On the East side of the building, there are the locals of the former drugstore whose painting decoration and furnishings date back to the second half of the 19th century.
