Description

Modena, St. Charles Theatre

St. Charles Theatre is situated at the noble stage of the College of the same name, which was founded in 1626 as College of the Nobles by Count Paolo Boschetti. The theatre was created to provide a place for the activities of pupils attending the institution. It was built in 1737 and was decorated with some paintings of Giorgio Magnanini, which were unfortunately lost within the reconstruction works executed in 1760. In the same year, the College acquired some private adjacent buildings overlooking Emilia road. During the 20th century, particularly in the 30s, the decoration was renovated according to a program retracing the new trend of the18th century: the fresco adorning the vault was painted and some molding frames and title blocks were added. The renovation project was carried out by Arcangelo Salvarani and by the apprentices of the Wall painting course at “Adolfo Venturi” Art Institute, who also painted the clipeus with the allegory of Minerva and the Arts. The theatre, totally devoid of its stage because of the last restoration work, lost its original function related to the College and is now regularly used as the seat of congresses, concerts and small theatre plays.
