Description
Modena, Art Civic Museum
The Art Civic Museum was born in 1962 after the Civic Museum founded by Carlo Boni in 1871 was subdivided in two different sectors: the archeological-ethnologic one and the artistic-historical one. The museum was founded to safeguard Modena cultural independence after the Italian unification and was shortly enriched by naturalistic and industrial collections in order to support the development of the local manufacturing economy. During the following decades, the Museum rapidly changed its appearance and started to host a copious and miscellaneous heritage including paintings, sculptures, pottery, glasses, weapons, music and scientific instruments, decorated cards and textiles. Such collection proves the local figurative culture and handmade production and is in a large part the result of donations by old families and private citizens of Modena. After its transfer in 1886 from its original seat in St. Bartolomeo to Palazzo dei Musei, the museum was re-arranged and its naturalistic and industrial collections were dismantled. The current appearance of the rooms follows the arrangement supplied by director Alberto Gandini at the beginning of the 20th century. Gandini’s arrangement was then enriched by Campori collection in 1929 and by Sernicoli donation of 2007 which is a fund of 20th century Baroque painting also including a set of silverware. Among the most valuable original collections, a collection of music instruments, mostly provided by the bequest of count and passionate musicologist Luigi Valdrighi, enlarged the wind instrument unit composed of Saetti and Borsari donations. The Valdrighi bequest, acquired in 1892, comprises some typical European string, wind and keyboard instruments mostly dating back to 18th and 19th century.
