Description

Mirandola, Jesus Church

Jesus Church was built by order of Alexander I of Pico who wanted to recall to the city the most important religious orders of that time on occasion of his investiture as Duke of Mirandola. The building work began in 1621 but was completed only in 1689 under the reign of Alexander I, nephew of Alexander II. The church’s façade is incomplete while the precious interior is characterized by the typical exuberant Baroque decoration and contains just a nave. Inside the church, the furnishings dating back to the end of the 17th century, are mostly made of wood and are  the work of some local carvers: the impressive frames and the two altars of the transept are the work of Paolo Bonelli while the pulpit was commissioned to Giacomo Gibertoni. The ledge moldings and the ciborium of the major altar particularly made of multicolored marbles are noteworthy too. The ledge is decorated with some allegorical images and heraldic signs alluding to the glory of the Duchy family whose coat of arms is to be found on the front door. Adjacent to the church, there is the Jesuit college. It was opened in 1690 and is now used as the seat of Mirandola’s library and civic museum. Both the church and the convent underwent important damages because of the earthquake of 2012.
